Well, it’s over. We’ve dedicated our lives to battling optimism, providing the cure for hope for millions of people worldwide. But it’s time to give up, thanks to some brilliant researchers for Psychological Science journal:
According to new research in Psychological Science, writing down your negative thoughts and tossing them in the garbage can erase your bad mood. … So try it: Next time something is driving you crazy, just write it down and toss it out. The action “gives a greater finality to your thoughts,” [Dr. Richard] Petty says.
(I once had a teacher in high school who insisted you could get rid of a headache by imagining a chalkboard with the word “HEADACHE” written on it, and then imagining yourself erasing it.)
(Probably needless to say, he was also a football coach.)
(Probably also needless to say, his teams consistently went 0-10.)
